Celebrating Matilda Hall - Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship

Posted

Matilda Hall recently completed her Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship with distinction at TARRC/Rubber Consultants, gaining valuable practical experience within the Physical Testing Laboratory and Mill Room and developing specialist knowledge of elastomers and polymers.

Throughout her apprenticeship, Matilda gained hands-on experience testing the mechanical properties of rubber and polymer materials, using equipment such as tensometers to assess properties including tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus and tear resistance. This provided an understanding of stress–strain behaviour and how factors such as material formulation, processing and specimen preparation can influence physical performance.

Alongside physical testing, Matilda gained practical experience in the Mill Room, developing an understanding of rubber compounding and processing. This included preparing and processing elastomer compounds and learning how different formulations and processing conditions can influence the properties of the finished material.

Working across both areas provided Matilda with a broader understanding of the relationship between formulation, processing and mechanical performance. She also developed an appreciation for the importance of accuracy, repeatability and reliability when producing scientific data, alongside the ability to investigate unexpected results and identify potential sources of variation.

Working alongside experienced scientists and technicians provided valuable insight into the wider elastomer and polymer industry and strengthened Matilda’s practical laboratory, problem-solving and scientific skills.

Reflecting on the apprenticeship, Matilda said:

“Working in both the Physical Testing Laboratory and Mill Room has allowed me to understand elastomeric materials from formulation through to final performance. The experience has given me the opportunity to combine scientific theory with practical laboratory work and has provided a strong foundation for continuing my career within the elastomer and polymer industry.”

Having completed her Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship with distinction, Matilda is now looking forward to building on this experience and continuing to develop her expertise in elastomer and polymer science.

We wish Matilda the very best of luck for the future, from everyone at TARRC/Rubber Consultants.
