Liam Pastor-Gorar recently completed his Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship at TARRC/Rubber Consultants, achieving an impressive distinction in his End-Point Assessment.
Starting his apprenticeship in February 2024, Liam immersed himself in a broad range of scientific techniques and practical training over the 18-month programme. His development included hands-on experience with high-level instrumentation such as GC-NCD, GC-NPD, ATR, NMR, DSC, SEM-EDX, TGA, FT-IR, ICP-OES, and TEM alongside skills in liquid/liquid extraction, preparation of solutions and operation of lab-specific equipment.
What made Liam’s apprenticeship particularly valuable was the variety of opportunities offered by TARRC. His curiosity and willingness to learn were matched by the supportive environment and flexibility TARRC/ Rubber Consultants provided, encouraging him to explore beyond the standard curriculum.
When asked why he chose a Level 3 Apprenticeship with TARRC, he explained that he wanted more than a classroom-based education. He was looking for a route that allowed him to combine practical experience with theoretical understanding and the apprenticeship at TARRC/Rubber Consultants, delivered in partnership with TIRO, offered exactly that.
Reflecting on his experience, Liam said: "A workplace like TARRC/Rubber Consultants offers widespread knowledge and flexibility that many companies don’t have to offer. Combining that with an ambition to learn, it has allowed me to gain valuable insights into not just one, but various scientific techniques of analysis."
Now with his Level 3 Apprenticeship completed to the highest standard, Liam is preparing for the next step in his scientific career - a Level 6 degree in Chemical Science with TARRC/ Rubber Consultants in collaboration with TIRO starting towards the end of 2025.
When asked about his goal once he has completed his degree, Liam said: "To become a qualified Chemical Scientist and further contribute to the Materials Characterisation Unit."
